While Carel and the others quietly explored their provisionary mountain home, Kileo’s mind drifted to the mud basin, back to when Raspail and she ambushed the fawn.

Raspail might be dead, she thought with a shudder.

It hadn’t occurred to her before. Ramblefoots lived hard, short lives, and he was at even more risk having no voice. The prospect of never seeing him again made her heart stop. She could remember the time, before she was smitten by Raspail, when she ignored him, when he was, as he’d put it, invisible to her. Now, with him so gone from her life and possibly dead, she hated herself for all those times she rebuffed him and caused him anguish.

What has become of you? she silently asked. Are you fighting for survival, moment by moment, running and hiding in the shadows of enemies?

No matter how bad things looked from up here, she knew that Raspail had it much worse.
